Ovarian estrogens exert critically important actions in hypothalamic neurons to regulate ovulatory cyclicity, reproductive behaviors, and energy homeostasis. Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) appears to mediate most of these effects, as disruption of ER signaling leads to infertility and metabolic syndrome.
